Closed Loop Water Systems

What is a Closed Loop Water System?
A closed loop water system refers to a piping system where hot or chilled water continuously recirculates with minimal introduction of new (makeup) water. These systems are commonly found in heating and cooling applications and are designed to conserve water and maintain consistent performance. However, they are still vulnerable to issues such as corrosion, scale formation, suspended particulates, and microbiological growth.
Closed loop systems typically lose less than 10% of their total volume per year, making water quality management essential for maintaining efficiency and protecting equipment.

Why Proper Water Treatment Matters

Maintaining high-quality water in a closed loop is critical to system longevity and operational efficiency. Neglecting proper treatment can lead to expensive repairs and reduced performance. At RCG Water Services, we help ensure your system stays within key parameters, including:
-
Inhibitor residual levels
-
Conductivity
-
pH balance
-
Metal concentrations
-
Bacterial activity
Every system has unique metallurgy and manufacturer requirements. We tailor chemical treatments to match these specifications and keep your system running smoothly.

RCG Water Services Solutions for Closed Loops
Scale and Corrosion Inhibitors
We offer specially formulated chemical inhibitors designed to protect against scale buildup and corrosion. As fresh water enters the system, oxygen is introduced—potentially causing corrosion if not treated properly. Our inhibitors help neutralize this risk.
Biocides for Microbiological Control
Our closed loop biocide treatments are formulated to combat microbiological fouling and prevent the growth of biofilms. These treatments target harmful microorganisms such as iron-reducing, sulfate-reducing, and denitrifying bacteria—all known culprits of microbial-induced corrosion.
Glycol-Based Freeze Protection
In environments prone to freezing, we recommend using inhibited glycol solutions—including both propylene and ethylene glycol—to prevent system damage. We provide custom concentrations and inhibitor packages to suit your application and climate conditions.
Filtration Systems
Adding side-stream filtration to your closed loop setup can dramatically improve water quality by removing suspended solids and particulate matter. This step enhances system efficiency and helps extend the life of piping and other equipment.
Ongoing Monitoring and Support
Closed loop systems should be monitored regularly for leaks and chemical balance. RCG Water Services offers comprehensive site surveys to evaluate your system’s current health and provide recommendations tailored to your facility.
Have questions about your hot or chilled water loops? Need glycol or treatment products? RCG Water Services is here to help with everything you need to keep your water systems in peak condition.
